Tuneable correlated disorder in alloys

چکیده

Many desirable material properties may be associated with disorder exhibiting local periodicity or correlations. However, few systems allow systematic studies into the effects of intrinsic crystallographic conflict on correlated disorder. The authors use epitaxial matching to stabilize an exemplar system: pseudo-bcc U${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Mo${}_{x}$ alloy, which exhibits a significant mismatch between basis preferred symmetry and global lattice. Employing diffuse inelastic x-ray scattering techniques 300-nm films, combined $a\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}b$ $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}o$ modeling, discover new form strong disorder-phonon coupling that dramatically suppresses phonon lifetimes. These findings have implications across broad range materials could exploited develop future functional materials.

Disorder screening in strongly correlated systems.

Electron-electron interactions generally reduce the low temperature resistivity due to the screening of the impurity potential by the electron gas. In the weak-coupling limit, the magnitude of this screening effect is determined by the thermodynamic compressibility which is proportional to the inverse screening length. We show that when strong correlations are present, although the compressibil...

Delocalisation transition in chains with correlated disorder

We show that in the one-dimensional (1D) Anderson model long-range correlations within the sequence of on-site potentials may lead to a region of extended states in the vicinity of the band centre, i.e., to a correlation-induced insulator-metal transition. Thus, although still disordered, the 1D system can behave as a conductor.

Correlated disorder in a p-wave superfluid

The role of aerogel as a means of introducing correlated disorder into superfluid He is examined in this paper. The aerogel structure is described by a diffusion-limited cluster aggregation model and compared to the results of small-angle x-ray scattering obtained from samples that were used to study the suppression of Tc as well as the development of the superfluid fraction. These results high...

Disorder-Driven Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Kondo Alloys

We show how a model of disordered Anderson lattices can account for many non-Fermi-liquid features observed in some Kondo alloys. Because of the exponential nature of the Kondo temperature scale TK , even moderate disorder leads to a rather broad distribution of Kondo temperatures, inducing strong effective disorder seen by the conduction electrons. Spins with very low TK ’s remain unquenched a...

Disorder and persistent photoconductivity in ZnxCd1-xSe semiconductor alloys.

A theoretical formula based on carrier scattering in systems with a certain degree of disorder has been derived, which describes well the buildup transients of persistent photoconductivity and carrier transport due to the conduction-band tail states in semiconductor alloys. Important parameters, including the distribution of tail states caused purely by alloy disorder, can be obtained by compar...
